KANCHIPURAM or KANCHEEPURAM, also known as KANCHI is a City / Town of Tamil Nadu State in India is situated on the banks of River Vegavathi. During British Rule, this city was known as ''Conjeeveram''. This place is well known for the presence of Historical Monuments. This ancient city was once a capital of the Pallava Dynasty. This holy place is well known for temples, once had over a thousand temples hence referred as Land of Thousand Temples. There are also few Churches and Mosques. It is an important pilgrimage place in the state of Tamil Nadu. Also, Kanchi is one of the seven most holy cities of Hindus. Kancheepuram was an important as well as continues to be an important religious and cultural place. It is a major destination to learn Tamil language as well as pilgrimage destination for Buddhists, Jains and Hindus. Kancheepuram is divided in to Big Kanchi and Little Kanchi. Big Kanchi is named as Shiva Kanchi and Little Kanchi is known as Vishnu Kanchi. Nearest Airport to reach Kanchi is Chennai International Airport which is around 65 Kilometers away from the Temple City. It is well connected by Roadways as well as Railways. Trains are available from Chennai City to reach your destination, but the frequency is very less. Its better to opt road services instead. There are several buses from Chennai to Kanchi, and also taxis are available from the Chennai Airport.

KANCHI KAMAKSHI KOVIL is an ancient temple, that spreads over 5 acres of land and four entrance points, is located in the historic city of Kanchi. This place of worship is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, one of the forms of Goddess Parvathi. It is believed that this temple must have constructed during Pallava Dynasty. Devotees can visit between 5.30 AM and 12.15 PM and again from 4.00 PM to 8.15 PM. Abhishekam is performed for Goddess Kamakshi thrice in a day. Morning Abhishekam starts at 5.30 AM, in the Afternoon Abhishekam starts at 10.30 AM and the Evening Abhishekam starts at 4.30 PM. Santhana Kappu is performed on all Wednesdays and Saturdays during evening time. Every month on Pournami day, Pournami Pooja or Navavarna Pooja is performed. Every day between 9.00 AM and 10.00 AM in the morning and between 7.00 PM and 8.00 PM in the evening, Sahasranamam Archana is performed. Ashtothram Archana is performed between 7.00 AM and 12.00 PM in the morning and between 6.00 PM and 8.00 PM in the evening. One of the significant festivals celebrated in this Amman Kovil is ''Sankara Jayanthi'' in the Tamil month of Chithrai. Other major festivals include Navaratri, Aadi, Aipassi Pooram and Vasanta Utsavam. Every day the ritual starts with Ko Pooja and Gaja Pooja (Holy Cow and Holy Elephant). There is a separate place where Holy Elephant performs pooja to deities by trumpeting daily at 5.00 AM. In the main entrance, we can see ''Kalabhairavar Deity'' and ''Mahishasura Mardini Deity'' on the left and right respectively. At the centre, we can see a Huge Dwajasthampa. Moving further we can see the deities of Lord Vinayaga, Goddess Saraswathi, Lord Ayyappan, Goddess Annaporani and Shri Adishankaracharya on outer prakaram. 


THE KALIASANATHAR TEMPLE is one of the oldest structures in this city and is dedicated to Lord ShivaThis place is well known for its Historical Importance. Various forms of Shiva can be seen in 58 small shrines across the temple. 
Entire structure resembles Pallava Architect. Temple was built during Pallava Dynasty by Rajasimha between between 685 and 705 AD. It is one of the tourist attractions of this divine city. 
  
One of the 108 Divya Desams (108 temples of Lord Vishnu visited by 12 Alwars), THE VARADHARAJA PERUMAL TEMPLE, dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located in the Vishnu Kanchi.  Morning Darshan starts from 6.00 AM to 12.30 PM and Evening Darshan starts from 3.30 PM till 8.30 PM. Daily poojas performed are Bringing Thirumanjanam & Vishwaroopa Darshan at 6.00 AM, First Thiruvaradhanam between 6.30 AM and 7.30 AM & again from 7.30 AM to 9.00 AM, Second Nivedanam between 10.00 AM and 11.00 AM, Thirukkapu Sathudal from 12.30 PM to 3.30 PM, Sarva Darshan from 3.30 PM to 6.00 PM, Third thirumalai Sathupadi & Nivedanam from 6.00 PM to 6.30 PM, Fourth Thiruvaradanam between 7.00 PM and 8.00 PM and Manna Senai Theermanam from 8.00 PM to 8.30 PM. During festival time devotees get the chance to see the Huge Umbrella. There are 32 Shrines, 19 Vimanams and around 389 ornate Pillars inside the complex. 

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, THE EKAMBARESWARAR KOVIL is one of the Five Elements Temples, Earth also known as Prithvi. Lord Shiva is worshiped as Ekambareswarar, in the form of Lingam referred as Prithvi Lingam. Spread across 25 acres of land, this pilgrimage place of interests has four gateway towers which is also known as Gopurams. The tallest of the four gopurams is the Southern Tower that has 11 storeys, stands at a height of 180 feet. Six Daily Rituals are performed between 5.30 AM and 10. PM. Around 25 Festivals are celebrated in a grand manner every year. Most prominent festival is Panguni Uthiram, which is celebrated for 10 days with great enthusiasm and devotion. It is believed that the Mango tree located inside this place, The Sthala Virutcham or The Temple Tree is 3,500 years old

KANCHEEPURAM GOVERNMENT MUSEUM was opened for public in the year 1999. So many interesting monuments are kept on display. Assortments includes Archaeological, Anthropological, Geological, Botanical, Zoological and Numismatic materials. Also seen are the significant monuments and interesting places of Kancheepuram. By visiting this museum one can know about the ancient History, Culture and Natural Resources of Kancheepuram. Museum is closed on all Fridays, Second Saturdays and National Holidays. On all other days it is open from 9.00 in the morning till 5.00 in the evening. 

Located in the Nellukara Street, THE CHITRAGUPTA TEMPLE  is one of the rare temples dedicated to Lord Chitragupta, one of the Hindu Deities. It is believed that he is the assistant of Lord Yama, the God of Death. This was built in the 9th century during Chola Rule. This divine centre is one of the main and prominent tourist attractions. Major festival celebrated here by devotees is Chitra Pournami in the month of April. Main deity Chitragupta is in seated posture here, with a pen on his right hand and scripts on his left hand. 

ULAGALANDHA PERUMAL TEMPLE located in this holy city is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Ulagalandha Perumal Kovil is one of the 108 Divyadesam of Lord Vishnu. History says that this kovil was built during 846 AD - 869 AD by Nandivarma III. It is believed that the renovation of the structure was done during Pallava Dynasty. This place is located near the Kamakshi Amman Thirukovil. This pilgrimage place spread across 60,000 Square feet of land. There are 3 towers with 7 Kalasas. Main deity - Lord Vishnu, in the form of Ulagalandha Perumal stands at an height of 35 Feet. Aarukaala Poojai ie. 6 Poojas per day is performed here namely Ushathkalam at 7.00 AM, Kalasanthi at 8.00 AM, Uchikalam at Noon, Sayarakshai at 6.00 PM, Irandamkalam at 7.00 PM and Ardha Jamam at 10.00 PM. During each pooja, three steps of rituals are followed namely Decoration / Alangaram, Food Offering / Neivethanam and Waving of Lamps / Deepa Aradanai. Two major festivals celebrated with full devotion are Brahmotsavam during Tamil month of Thai and Vamana Jayanthi during Tamil month of Avani. 

KANCHI KAMAKOTI PEETHAM, also known as KANCHI MUTT is one of the Hindu Monastic Institution located in this holy city. Adi Shankaracharya founded this mutt. Traditionally Kamakoti refers Goddess Kamakshi. It is believed that this Mutt is 2500 years old. Adi Shankara spent his last days in this Mutt and attained moksha in this divine place. There is a Samadhi inside the Mutt. Apart from the Religious based activities, Kamakoti Peetham also concentrates on Society Development, Education and Medical Establishments. 

ASHTABUJA PERUMAL TEMPLE is another famous religious place located in this divine town. This place is dedicated to Lord Perumal. The Lord stands with 8 arms and hence referred as Ashtabuja Perumal. This kovil is one of the 108 Divyadesams of Lord Perumal. 

CHRIST CHURCH is an important religious place of Christian Community people. This was built in the year 1921 by McLean in Scottish Architectural Style with arches and pillars. 

In the year 1980 the house where Arignar Anna was born, was converted in to ANNA MEMORIAL, where his Statue along with Photographs and Life History can be seen. 

SAKUNTHALA JAGANATHAM MUSEUM OF FOLK ARTS is a 400 years old ancient home of Damal Family. This house was converted in to a museum and the items displayed inside are Ancient Furniture's, Antique, Dolls, Ancient Palm Leaves, Musical Instruments, Pooja Items, Lamps, Stones, Sculptures, Paintings, Traditional Dresses, Traditional Make up Cases, Silk Wear, Cotton Wear, Jewellery and Indological Books. 

KANCHEEPURAM KUDIL or KANCHI KUDIL, a must see location, is a 100 years old ancestral house. Tourists get to know about the ancient generations classical living styles. Other nearby attractions are Chengalpattu which is around 35 kilometers away, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Crocodile Bank and Mudaliarkuppam which is around 90 kilometers away. 

Facts Interesting about Kanchipuram: 

It is believed that Kanchipuram earlier belonged to Dravida Dynasty which is a fictitious Dynasty mentioned in the Mahabharata. During Pallava period, a traveller from China named Xuanzang visited Kancheepuram in 640 AD and praised its Culture and Tradition. During Pallava period, Kanchipuram was a learning centre for Hinduism and Buddhism. Architecture styles of structures here resembles Pallava and Vijayanagar styles, since many temples were built during Pallava Dynasty and Vijayanagara period. Government of India has chosen Kanchi as One of the Heritage Cities for the scheme ''Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana'' - HRIDAY. Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Thirukovil is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas in India. One of the 7 Moksha Puras present here. 14 out of 108 Divyadesams are situated in this holy city. It is believed that the priests of Varadharajar Perumal Kovil are descendants of Yagya Valkier. Best Time to Visit is between October and March.
