RAMESWARAM also referred as RAMESVARAM & RAMESHWARAM  is a town in the Ramanathapuram District of the INDIAN State of TAMIL NADU. Rameswaram is considered as one of the Holiest Places in India for the Hindus. Located on a beautiful island, the Rameshwaram is separated by a Pamaban Bridge from Srilanka. As per Hindu Mythology, Rameswaram is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge to Sri Lanka across the sea. In Sanskrit, Rameswaram means "Lord of Rama". The town has an average elevation of 33 feet. The major area of Rameswaram is occupied by The Ramanathaswamy Temple. MADURAI is the nearest Airport which is around 174 kilometres away from the Holy Place Rameswaram. Flights are available from most of the Indian cities to Madurai. This town has its own Railway Station. Rameswaram is well connected with all major towns of Tamil Nadu and city buses are available through out the day. For local travel within the town, plenty of government buses are available. Apart from that, Autorishaws and Taxis are available to hire.

RAMESHWARAM TEMPLE also known as RAMANATHASWAMY TEMPLE is a famous Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the 274 Paadal Petra Sthalams. It is believed that this temple was built during the 17th century. Lord Shiva is in the form of Lingam and there are two lingams inside the sanctum. One was built by Lord Rama from Sand. Various halls like Anuppu Mandapam, Surkavara Mandapam, Setupati Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam and Nandi Mandapam can be seen inside this ancient temple. Separate shrines are there for the Goddess Parvathavardhini, Goddess Vishalakshi, Lord Vishnu, Sayanagriha and Lord Ganesha. 

DHANUSHKODI TEMPLE & BEACH is located at a distance of around 18 kilometres from Rameshwaram. Dhanushkodi is the eastern end of the island that is named after Lord Rama's bow. Dhanushkodi is one of the major tourist attractions. During the cyclones, in the year 1964, Dhanushkodi was completely destroyed. The only Salvage of the cyclone is The Kodandaramaswamy Temple where idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman and Vibhishana can be found.

Located on the beach side of Ramanathaswamy temple, the AGNITHEERTHAM is one of the important and sacred theertham. It is one of the 64 sacred baths in Rameshwaram. Agnitheertham is located outside the temple complex. It is believed that taking a dip in this holy water vanishes one's sins.

ANNAI INDIRA GANDHI ROAD BRIDGE is the longest bridge in Southern India which connects Rameswaram Island with the main land. This bridge is also known as PAMBAN BRIDGE as it located beside Pamban. Pamban is the sacred place where Lord Rama quench the thirst of Sita by throwing His arrow in the place where cool water came. Ships passes under the bridge.

THE FIVE FACED HANUMAN TEMPLE is one of the pilgrimage place in Rameswaram. As per mythological evidence, Lord Hanuman showed his profile with five faces here. Idols of Lord Rama. Laxman, Sita and Lord Hanuman are placed in the temple. Floating stone can be seen outside the temple, which was used to create the bridge on the sea as mentioned in Indian mythology.

GANDHAMADHANA PARVATHAM is a massive two storey temple where the feet of Lord Rama are imprinted on the chakra placed in the temple. Those who believe, visits this sacred place and offer their prayers at the feet of Lord Rama. Gandhamadhana Parvatham is one of the Historic significant places in India.

ARIYAMAN BEACH is also known as KHUSHI BEACH. It is one of the white sand beach. Entertainments like Boating, Swimming and Water Sports are available. Cottages are available by the seashore, so those who wish to stay can avail one.

JATAYU TIRTHAM : In the Epic Ramayana, Jatayu, King of the Birds ( Royal Eagle), who fought in vain with the demon-king Ravana to save Sita, is said to have fallen down at this place and got its name Jatayu Theertham. His wings got separated in the fight. A Jatayu Temple is built at the place of its burial as an appreciation of its sacrifice.


JADA TIRTHAM is a small temple within Kaveri Tirtham with mythological importance. A small temple, which is known for its beauty and artmanship, is found near a large Peepal Tree, where it is believed that all the deities rested here.

LAKSHMAN TIRTHAM was built in memory of Lord Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama and all the sculptures in the temple are carved out of marbles.

VILLONDI TIRTHAM  is located around 7 kilometres from the main temple on the way to Pamban. Villoondi, in Tamil, means 'buried bow'. It is the place where Rama quenched the thirst of Sita by dipping the bow into the sea water. Hence, the place got its name Villondi Tirtham.

KOTHANDARAMASWAMY TEMPLE is covered by the Indian Ocean on all sides.It is located on the southern most tip of India. This temple stands intact even during calamities.The temple walls have wonderful paintings that depict the instances from the Epic Ramayana.

BURIAL PLACE OF ABDUL KALAM is where the mortal remains of the Former President of India, are laid to rest in peace. The burial ground is visited often by admirers to pay homage to the Missile Man of India.

ABDUL KALAM HOUSE, is the place where our Former President was brought up by his parents. The House is now changed into a museum and visitors throng this place to have a glimpse of Abdul Kalam's life and achievements.

KALAM NATIONAL MEMORIAL is an initiative by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and was built in 2015 in Honor of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the Missile Man of India. There are various items in display viz., replicas of missiles, rockets and information about the Pokhran Nuclear Test.

KUNTHU KAL BEACH is situated on the Pamban Island in the Indian Ocean. It attracts tourists for its beauty and sand lined by coconut trees. There are rich medicinal and herbal trees around this place.

NAMBU NAYAGIAMMAN TEMPLE is a 14th Century temple dedicated to Lord Rama. The unique feature of the temple is that the main shrine is an open structure to allow sunlight inside. The temple has a beautiful architecture, enormous bells and beautiful lawns. 

TIRUPULLANI is a Chola Period temple , known for its Dravidian Architecture. It is one of the 108 Divya Desa Kshetram dedicated to Lord Vishnu. But, the presiding and main deity in this temple is Lord Rama, in a reclining posture, in the name Lord Darbha Sayana Rama. It is located around 54 Kms from the main Town Rameshwaram.

WATER BIRD SANCTUARY offers home to many avian species. It is separated from the mainland by Pamban Channel and is a Paradise to Bird Watchers.Several birds migrate to this sanctuary for breeding.
