How to Reach Coonoor?
There is no airport in Coonoor and the nearest one is COIMBATORE airport, which is around 100 kilometres away from your travel destination. From Coimbatore, you have the options to travel by Bus or Cab. Nearest Railway station is in Mettupalayam which is approximately 46 kilometres away from your holiday spot. Buses are available to Coonoor from Coimbatore as well as Mettupalayam. It is well connected by Road from Queen of Hills,Ooty, a must visit travel destination.

DODDABETTA is a Mountain Peak, located at an altitude of 8,650 feet. Doddabetta Peak is surrounded by Reserved Forest. In Kannada, Doddabetta means ''The Big Hill''. This Peak attracts millions of visitors from all over the world through out the year. In South India, The Doddabetta is the Fourth Highest Peak. Also, it is the Highest Peak in the Nilgiris District. For Trekking Lovers, it is one of the ideal place in this Hill Station. Being surrounded by forest area, plenty of trees, shrubs, herbs can be seen all around the place including the peak. One can see the bird view of the entire surroundings of Coonoor from the top. To get the beautiful view, there is a Telescope House at the top. In this Observatory House, there are two telescopes available to see the beauty of the nature. Telescope House or Observatory House was opened for public on 18th June,1983. Being the hilly area, it is better to avoid visiting during night times. The ideal time would be from early in the morning till 5 in the evening.
SIM'S PARK, an important sight seeing place is a Natural Park. Established in the year 1874, the Sim's Park is located around 5,840 feet above the sea level. The average minimum temperature around this picnic spot is around 5 degree celsius. Sim's Park spread across an area of around 12 hectares and it is the home for more than 1000 species of trees, herbs, shrubs and flowers. Visitors get the chance to enjoy the natural colorful beds, lawns and rockeries. Rare trees like Rudraksh a Bead Tree, Cinnamomum, Queensland Karry Pine, Ornamental Tree, Araucaria, Quercus, Phoenix, Magnolia, Pine, Turpentine, Tree Ferns and Camelia are found inside this green palace. More than 300 types of Rose Flowers are found in the well maintained Rose Garden. It is one of the best photographic location.
NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY or NMR is known as Mountain Railways of India. It is a Narrow Gauge Railway that runs on Steam Engine. This railway runs between the places, Mettupalayam and Ooty. Journey time would be around 5 hours to cover the distance 46 kilometers one way. There are around 13 stations in between. The return would take around only 3.30 hours time instead of 5 hours onward uphill travel. This mountain railway was built by Britishers in the year 1908. Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travelling in this train itself is one of the best activity to spend our vacation with thrill, fun and joy. This thrilling train journey passes through 208 curves, 16 tunnels and around 250 bridge. During holidays, it is advised to book well in advance as it is the most preferred mode of transport for thousands of tourists.
TIGER HILL COTTAGE is a cottage which is also known as The Dream Land Hill Cottage, that is located in Tiger Hills. Surrounded by Tea Gardens and Blue Mountains, the Tiger Hill Cottage is located at an altitude of around 6,030 feet. TIGER HILL CEMETERY was used by Britishers as a burial site during the 19th century and now, is one of the famous tourist places. Most of the tombs found in this cemetery belongs to officers of East India Company and their family members.
CATHERINE FALLS, located at Kotagiri, is a Double Cascade Waterfall. The water falls from the distance of 250 feet and Catherine Falls is the Second Highest Falls in the Mountains of Nilgiri. Earlier, this spot was known as Geddhehaada Halla, means Foothills Dale River. It is one of the most visited falls and it is also one of the ideal spot to spend your vacation with family in this nature divine place. This nature gift destination is surrounded by Forest, Tea Plantations and Mettupalayam Plains which is a treat to watch. From Dolphin Nose, an another tourist destination spot, one can get the full view of Catherine Falls. Trekking is allowed only after obtaining prior permission from the District Forest Officer. Right after the monsoons, that is, between October and May, is the best time to visit.
KATARY FALLS is the Third Largest Waterfall in the district of Nilgiris. The most thrilling part is the one can reach the place only by trekking. The water falls from a distance of 180 feet in Katary. The First Hyde Power Plant is India, the Kateri Hydro Electric System is located here.
KATTERY PARK, a famous park is spread across around 2 acres of land. It was inaugurated for public in the year 2011 by the Department of Horticulture. It is a huge challenge to count the number of flowers inside as there are more than one lakh can be seen with over 25 varieties. The pavement are well decorated and there is an exclusive play area for the visiting kids to entertain themselves. This is one of the favorite place for the nearby locals to spend their evenings with family in this nature park.
DOLPHIN'S NOSE, a popular tourist spot, is a View Point. It is located around 5,075 feet above the sea level and it is one of the best spot to get the spectacular view of the hill station. It is named so because the tip of the Peak resembles like the nose of a dolphin. The rock formation around this place is entirely unique in nature. On the left and right side of the Dolphin's Nose Peak, huge Ravines can be seen. Tea Plantations can be seen all over this place. From this point, one can get the beautiful view of the Catherine Falls.
WELLINGTON LAKE is commonly known as Silent Lake and is located in Wellington Cantonment Area. Unlike other places, Wellington lake is less crowded. There are so many attractions inside this picnic spot. Musical Fountain takes places every evening provided if there are more than 20 visitors and of-course the weather should cooperate. There is an exclusive play area for children, where they can spend their time at their choice. Boating facility is available in the small lake located inside, hence the visitors can avail this facility and can enjoy the beauty of nature by roaming in the boat. There is a walking track to entertain walking lovers.
ALL SAINTS CHURCH is one of the Oldest Churches and it was built in the year 1854. Their mission is to uplift the community spiritually and work towards well being of the society. The church is well known for its unique design glass windows and pews. One of the must see place where one can find a Painted Pipe Organ. One may have to get prior permission to visit on weekdays. It is one of the well maintained churches in South India.
KETTI VALLEY, located between Ooty and Coonoor, is an Awesome View Point and also The Largest Valley in the district of Nilgiris. It is one of the must visit destination for nature lovers as well as photographers. This view point provides astonishing panoramic view of the entire Ketti Valley. Ketti Valley is popularly known as Switzerland of Nilgiris. It is referred so because the view we get to see around the Ketti Valley resembles the views of Switzerland. BLACK BRIDGE, also popularly known as MANEKSHAW BRIDGE, located in Wellington is a Historic Bridge that connects the Wellington with Ooty - Coonoor Road. This Historic Bridge was built in the year 1858. Unfortunately, it got collapsed during the construction time itself. Again this bridge was constructed in the year 1878. This time it was built using wooden structures. In the beginning it was known as Water Loo Bridge. Local people refer this bridge as Black Bridge, since the bridge was painted with black color.
LAWS FALLS is situated around 10 Kms from the town and is surrounded by thick and dense natural forest. Water falls from a height of over 185 feet. One has to be very careful as there are quite a few slippery rocks around. LADY CANNING'S SEAT is situated on the outskirts of the town. It is a tourist spot which gives picturesque view of the entire valley.
DROOG FORT, is around 15 Kms away from Coonoor. History says, Tiger of Mysore, the great Tipu Sultan used this fort as an outpost. But sadly, only one wall remains currently.
THE PASTEUR INSTITUTE OF INDIA was named after the French scientist Louis Pasteur. It is an autonomous body that functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and produces DPT and Rabies Vaccines. Well known research institution "THE POMOLOGICAL STATION" which researches about apples, apricot, plums, peaches, pomegranates and lemons is located here. LAMB'S ROCK, also known as ECHO ROCK, is situated on the Nilgiri Hill slopes. It is famous for its landscape, panorama and trekking adventures.
